Lonnie Mack played a bit of bass guitar on the Doors' albums, but for the most part, the configuration was the same on record as it was live: no true bass, with Manzarek more than filling in the slack by playing with his left hand a Fender keyboard bass that sat atop the Vox organ he played with his right. Fortunately for the bass players of the world, very few other bands ever attempted to follow the Doors' example. Here are a few of Manzarek's most memorable musical moments: LIGHT MY FIRE" THE OPENING RIFF The tune was guitarist Robby Krieger's and the lyrics were Morrison's, but 90 percent of what makes the song is Manzarek. He sent the band out while he came up with the opening riff, which Morrison had the idea to also make the closing riff when the song lacked a proper ending. Krieger had written it as a folk-type song, whereas drummer John Densmore suggested bringing in a Latin or flamenco feel for the verses. Then, as the cherry on top, Manzarek went all classical on their butts. with a touch of John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things. too. "All my classical studies came to fruition. Manzarek wrote in his memoir. "A simple circle of fifths was the answer. The chords were G to D, F to Bb, Eb to Ab (two beats on each chord) and then an A for two measures. Run some Bach filigrees over the top in a kind of turning-on-itself Fibonacci spiral — like a a nautilus shell — and you've got it. 'Eureka. An illuminati moment. Cartwheeling into 'Light My Fire. Leaping into history. As critic Greil Marcus wrote of the first notes of the band's first single: Announcing itself, announcing the song, announcing the band just after Densmore's first drumbeat, the piece Manzarek devised is thrilling — thrilling as a promise, thrilling as a thing in itself. LIGHT MY FIRE" THE SOLO As if that riff weren't enough, Manzarek's soloing late in the song could last as long as six minutes, as heard in the example above. He might have actually saved a lot of '60s music fans from trying hallucinogens or joining cults: When you could get a quick trip to ecstasy with that little muss and fuss, who needed anything but a record player to join the blissful brigade? BREAK ON THROUGH" The best example of Manzarek's piano-bass was the opening riff to this classic, which the keyboard player described as Ray Charles-inspired, even as Krieger was aping Paul Butterfield for the guitar part. If you're missing the more overtly organ-y Vox sound, don't worry: Manzarek's right hand gets as busy as his left hand before long. "LOVE ME TWO TIMES" The Beatles used harpsichords where you (or at least George Martin) might think they ought to go on a 1960s track. It was Manzarek's genius to offer a harpsichord solo — and a fairly psychedelic one at that — on an otherwise guitar-driven blues song about carnal excess. (So that's what all those Muddy Waters records were missing all those years. WHEN THE MUSIC'S OVER" This epic closer to the Strange Days album featured Manzarek showing off the trademark Doors sound. Or was it trademark Herbie Hancock? Manzarek stated that he was inspired to come up with this part by the jazz man's "Watermelon Man. In the performance above, you can see that Manzarek still had the right stuff last year, playing in tandem with Krieger and a Morrison ringer. "RIDERS ON THE STORM" In the video above, Manzarek explains how he turned "Riders" from a cowpoke parody to a moody, jazz-inflected, blues-rock classic via some "rainy" electric piano riffing. This is one Doors song that does include an actual bass part, by session player Jerry Scheff; Manzarek assumed the part he'd written on a keyboard would be equally easy to play on a four-stringed instrument, until Schiff informed him just how finger-crampingly complex it was to recreate on bass. "STRANGE DAYS" The opening bars of the title track from the Strange Days album were so mesmerizing, Greil Marcus devoted an entire chapter in his book The Doors: A Lifetime of Listening to Five Mean Years just to analyzing the song's first seven seconds. Bonus: The X YEARS Manzarek discovered X, the greatest rock band to come out of L. A. after the Doors, and produced their first three albums — including a cover of the Doors' Soul Kitchen" on their 1979 debut. He generally stayed out of the group's way on record, but did contribute a few signature organ parts. and showed up for reunion shows in San Francisco in 2010 and L. A in 2012.

The hits comes thick and fast, tightly arranged and slickly performed, but this lineup of well-preserved mostly male musicians gives the show the bland atmosphere of a celebrity tribute band. The gig is dedicated to Manzarek, who died in 2013, and director Justin Kreutzmann pads out the gig footage with an interview the keyboardist gave and fresh input from Krieger and Densmore. The pair genially repeat anecdotes for the 1, 000th time: how they met Manzarek at a transcendental meditation course and how they were initially underwhelmed by Morrison, then an insecure, shy kid. Still, some of the stories deserve repeating, such as the one about the time Morrison dropped acid before going on stage at the Hollywood Bowl, and spent the first few minutes picking at the AstroTurf. In archive footage, the sound on mute, we see him later at that same gig, whirling and howling, beautiful and unhinged. That energy is not matched at the tribute gig, though guest singer Andrew Watt, with a preening performance of LA Woman, does a fair imitation of Morrisons messiah complex, if not his appeal. Speaking to camera, Densmore glosses over his longrunning feud with Krieger over touring as the Doors without Morrison. At the time he is on record as saying: “It cant be the Doors without Jim. According to Britt Leach, a fellow Army Security Agency enlistee, Manzarek "had collected an entire duffel bag" of cannabis specimens during his service in Laos; this may have been used to fund his subsequent graduate education. [6] The Doors [ edit] Following his return to the United States, he re-enrolled in UCLA's graduate film program in 1962, where he received a M. F. A. in cinematography in 1965. [7] 8] During this period, he met future wife Dorothy Fujikawa and undergraduate film student Jim Morrison. At the time, Manzarek was in a band called Rick & the Ravens with his brothers Rick and Jim. [9] Forty days after finishing film school, thinking they had gone their separate ways, Manzarek and Morrison met by chance on Venice Beach in California. Morrison said he had written some songs, and Manzarek expressed an interest in hearing them, whereupon Morrison sang rough versions of " Moonlight Drive. My Eyes Have Seen You" and " Summer's Almost Gone. Manzarek liked the songs and co-founded The Doors with Morrison at that moment. During this period, Manzarek met guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore at a Transcendental Meditation lecture and recruited them for the incipient band. Following a few months of live gigs, Jac Holzman "rediscovered" The Doors and signed them to Elektra Records. The Doors lacked a bass guitarist (except during recording sessions) so at live performances Manzarek played the bass parts on a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass. His signature sound was that of the Vox Continental combo organ, an instrument used by many other psychedelic rock bands of the era. He later used a Gibson G-101 Kalamazoo combo organ (which looks like a Farfisa) because the Continental's plastic keys frequently broke. During the Morrison era, Manzarek was the group's regular backing vocalist. He occasionally sang lead, as exemplified by covers of Muddy Waters 's "Close To You" released on 1970s Absolutely Live) and "You Need Meat (Don't Go No Further. recorded during the L. Woman sessions and initially released as the B-side of " Love Her Madly. He went on to share lead vocals with Krieger on the albums ( Other Voices and Full Circle) released after Morrison's death. Ford. [12] He also worked extensively with Hearts of Fire screenwriter and former SRC front man Scott Richardson [13] on a series of spoken word and blues recordings entitled "Tornado Souvenirs. Manzarek and Fujikawa remained married until his death. They had a son, Pablo born in August 31st 1973, and three grandchildren. BACK IN THE motherland, I hear Rajasthan is gearing up for a gargantuan wildlife summit, the 11th World Wilderness Congress, in March. With some 1, 800 delegates descending on the Pink City, and with a ‘star cast of speakers from around the world, it is causing much hooplah. Needless to say, dialogue is essential, as is the sharing of ideas and best practices. But aside from all the networking and patting each others backs, let us hope measurable targets will be set; for land under wildlife, and for wild animal populations. Last year was one of the better periods for the sector, with Pedro Almodóvars Pain and Glory reaching 1. 53m – the biggest for a non-Bollywood foreign language film since Untouchable (2. 04m lifetime) in 2012. Cast: Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, Sharad Kelkar, Kajol, Luke Kenny Director: Om Raut Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior stars Ajay Devgn as the valorous hero of the films title, Chhatrapati Shivaji s trusted lieutenant Subedar Tanhaji Malasure, who, according to legend, never backed away from a fight. Yet its Saif Ali Khan, playing the films villain, who appears to be having more fun. Saif plays Udaybhan, Mughal emperor Aurangzebs Rajput general, who sports black robes, a thick beard, a deceptive smile, and an unending appetite for cruelty. Lets just say hes cut from the same cloth as Ranveer Singh s Alauddin Khilji. The film, directed by Om Raut, is set in the year 1670, and focuses on the Battle of Sinhagad between the Marathas and the Mughals. History has it that Tanhaji abandoned his sons wedding to defend the Kondhana Fort near Pune from Udaybhan and his troops. The filmmakers stick to the broad strokes of the story, but details appear to be cheerfully exaggerated and fictionalised. Characters, communities, and empires are reduced to archetypes. The Marathas are all noble, swaraj-worshipping warriors; the Mughals are opportunistic, deceitful, invaders. Over nearly two hours and fifteen minutes the stage is set for a sprawling epic that is frankly less historical and more action saga. It is also the best way to enjoy this film. Tanhaji is first introduced in the film swooping down on the enemy in a ravine, his men and him vanquishing them with strategy and sheer daring. Its a stunning entry. The film is mounted on an extravagant scale, with massive sets, big action set pieces, booming background music, and elaborate costumes. There is more than a whiff of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and particularly Padmaavat in the films lighting and colour tones. The cinematography by Keiko Nakahara is sweeping, very much in keeping with the overall brief of aesthetics. The action scenes are especially effective, and further enhanced if you choose to watch the film in 3D. Sequences depicting the guerilla tactics employed by the Marathas to scale the fort are excellently executed, and the final battle between Tanhaji and Udaybhan is nothing short of spectacular. With a deadly cannon aimed in the direction of Shivajis Rajgad Fort, the two men face off in a bloody fight to the finish. Of the cast, Kajol shows up in the role of Tahajis wife Savitri, and the scenes between them benefit from the actors easy chemistry. Sharad Kelkar nicely channels Chhatrapati Shivajis nobility, and Luke Kenny is an inspired casting choice for the role of Aurangzeb. Ajay Devgn brings unmistakable earnestness to the role of the honourable warrior. It is to his credit that even while mouthing heavy dialogues loaded with repeated use of words like “ bhagwaa dhwaj ”, he roots the hero in a kind of relatable humanity. The scene-stealer, however, is Saif Ali Khan who sinks his teeth into the role of Udaybhan. His sadistic general is a man who throws cold water on sleeping prisoners, and in one scene sends a poor guard falling to his death after screaming in his face. It must also be said that Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior speaks directly to our hyper-nationalistic climate. The history is dubious, the politics problematic. It feeds into what seems to have become Bollywoods preferred stereotype of the enemy: all savage, brutal, ruthless ‘outsiders. If you can look beyond that, youll appreciate the robust filmmaking, the visceral battle scenes, and a delicious performance by an actor whos seldom got his due. For some that will be enough. Im going with three out of five for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Rating: 3 / 5.

Review: Downhill Release date: February 14, 2020 Running time:  86 minutes Starring: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell, Miranda Otto Downhill is the 2020 remake of the 2014 Swedish Film "Force Majeure" where we follow Billie (Louis-Dreyfus) and Pete Staunton (Ferrell) as they embark on a family vacation with their two sons to an Austrian ski resort.  But during this family vacation, a reaction to an avalanche puts their marriage to the ultimate test as each questions the other's choices, the protection of their family, and their feelings for one another. Will Ferrell has a pretty recognizable type of over the top humor, but in this movie it was turned down a notch.  Thankfully, although his humor was muted, his facial expressions and mannerisms were not.  It was nice to see his character here to add some diversity to his roles.  It is also worth noting that Will Ferrell and Julia Louise-Dreyfus have good on-screen chemistry.  In fact both of them did excellent jobs in their roles: they were able to capture the emotional turmoil that they were going through in a believable manner, which helps the audience empathize with what they are going through. This dark comedy has a good amount of humor and laughs, however it is tough for me to see what the target audience of this is given its Valentine's release date.  It is not a traditional date movie, and although the dialogue and scenarios are realistic, it is tough to get invested in these characters.  The beautiful shots of Austrian mountains are a huge plus for anyone who loves seeing beautiful scenery, but those views are put against a dark comedy and plenty of awkward tension.  Additionally, the story seems to swirl downhill only to lead to a far too convenient conclusion, hurting my overall enjoyment of the film.  I would have liked for them to fully explore some of the themes, rather than tying up this relatively short movie. Considering a very competitive opening holiday weekend, this movie might have to wait till you reach the bottom of the slope for you to view.  Downhill has interesting roles for its two stars set against a realistic story and beautiful scenery for this relationship dark comedy. Rent It Review: Malang Release date: February 7, 2020 Running time: 135 minutes Starring:  Aditya Roy Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Disha Patani Malang is a new thriller that is essentially two distinct movies blended together.  It is one part youth exploration film, where two people meet in Goa and live their best life partying, experimenting, enjoying their freedom, and slowly conquering their worldly fears.  It is also a thriller about a seemingly superhuman killer hunting down cops on December 24.  These two movies intertwine throughout, providing context to one another and pulling you deeper into the madness that is Malang. The visual style of Malang is really a sight to behold.  Especially during the party scenes, the colors and effects really pop off the screen.  Neon lights, glowing paint, various drug-induced effects, they all contribute to a visual style that lets you experience what the youths in the film are.  Outside of the party scenes, there are some beautiful scenes exploring Goa.  And even in the darker parts of the movie, the visual style is apparent.  Colors will pop, including lots of neon placed at the right times.  The fight scenes use an appropriate amount of slow motion and other effects (lots of rain and other water) to really make them feel impactful.  This impact is helped along by some great sounds.  Not only some fantastic music during the party scenes, but some bone crunching effects during the fights and action.  And although there is a decent amount of violence, it is never too pronounced or over the top.  The story of Malang is well done, aside from one complaint.  The film weaves the two disparate stories together well, and slowly reveals aspects of both stories to the viewer.  The thriller side of the film is really interesting, and some of the reveals happen at just the right time.  However, there is one turn in the movie that just feels like it is too over the top.  It really dampened what is an otherwise very enjoyable story.  It was critical to the overall plot of the film, but I feel like it could have either been altered to something less extreme or have been foreshadowed more during the film.  However, that being said Balang was one of the more enjoyable films I have seen out of Bollywood.  It has a very good story and also embraces some aspects of youth culture that are often hidden away in Hindi films. Unleash the madness with Malang's wonderful visuals, bone crunching sound, and story that will keep you guessing! Watch It Review: Sonic the Hedgehog Running time: 99 minutes Starring:  Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, James Marsden Who would have thought that a movie based on a 90s videogame with a less than stellar recent track record would be good?  I definitely didn't think so after the debacle of the first trailer.  But thankfully, the Sonic movie is a really fun movie!  It quickly endears itself to you with enough references and callbacks to the film to keep you entertained.  In it, Sonic is an alien from another planet blah blah, who cares!  The story itself, like most sonic video games, is only a vehicle for good effects, a sense of speed, and the hedgehog putting himself into ever more perilous moments. The hearts of this movie really comes from two sources.  The first is the enjoyable camaraderie between Sonic (perfectly voiced by Schwartz) and Sheriff Wachowski (Marsden.   The two play off each other well with Sonic speaking quickly, telling good and bad jokes, and getting into all sorts of trouble.  Marsden, is the perfect foil to Schwartz, a calmer, more confident figure to counteract Sonic's crazy style.   Schwartz does a fantastic job as Sonic and really seems to get the character and his mannerisms.  The other source is Jim Carrey's amazing performance as Dr. Robotnik.  It seems like the filmmakers just told him to go crazy and do what he wanted to.  He has some really funny lines, some outbursts that come from nowhere, and even a part where he just dances during his evil plan.  It doesn't always make sense for the character, but it is always enjoyable.  In fact, most of the Sonic movie doesn't really tie itself to the video games, and that is a good thing.  The filmmakers took the characters and many of the elements, and rather than being saddled by them, made a thoroughly enjoyable film on top of them. As with the Sonic video games, Sonic the Hedgehog has really good effects and an amazing sense of speed.  The risk in a computer generated film is that the CG can break your immersion, but here they do just enough to bring Sonic to life without pulling you out of the movie.  And as you would expect from a film based on a video game series, the movie also has plenty of throwbacks to the Sonic games.  From ring sound effects, to actual rings, to some animations and expressions that are inspired by the video game, there is definitely enough nostalgia here to please Sonic fans.  Sonic the Hedgehog is an entertaining re-imagining of the classic video game.  It's wonderful performances, great special effects, and plenty of humor and callbacks to the game will quickly entertain you! Streaming (HBO) John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum John Wick Chapter 3 is an action-packed new chapter in the John Wick saga.  It has John Wick's trademark flair, brutal and imaginative action, and continues the assassin's story against ever increasing odds.  For more information, check out our review! Review: Birds of Prey Running time: 109 minutes Starring:  Margot Robbie, Rosie Perez, Mary Elizabeth Winstead After 2016's less than stellar Suicide Squad, DC decided to make a clean break from that movie's Joker. twice!  It made a dark, serious origin story in 2019's Joker; and it salvaged the best thing from Suicide Squad for a separate movie featuring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn.  And wow was that a great decision.  Whereas the Joker is a dark descent into one person's madness, Birds of Prey is an explosive celebration of Harley Quinn's craziness and individuality.  After her final breakup with Mr. J, Harley Quinn decides to set out on her own.  However, she finds that life without the Joker is tougher and more dangerous than she originally thought.  She has to quickly learn some very dangerous lessons in order to survive in her new solo lifestyle. The main draw of Birds of Prey is Robbie's fantastic portrayal of Harley Quinn.  She has the right combination of ruthlessness, humor, charm, and pure craziness to bring the iconic DC character to life.  Quinn is both predictable and unpredictable at the same time.  I'm glad that Suicide Squad was made because it gave birth to this badass lady who will hopefully appear in more DC movies.  Robbie is joined by an eclectic group of other leading ladies who are all insanely different making for an unlikely, but very interesting cast.  None of them are your typical villain or hero, but they each have their motivations for being pulled into the gravitational craziness that is Harley Quinn.  One is a cop who ends up investigating Harley, there is a singer and a pickpocket who both run into Quinn, and a vengeful assassin (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead who is especially engaging as the Huntress.   Each of these ladies' backstories are explored briefly; it is a nice touch but doesn't make you lose focus from the main star.  However, outside of the stellar cast, Birds of Prey has style in droves.  There are bold color choices throughout that give the movie a comic book feel despite the realistic, New York setting.  Some scenes have splashes of color that pop off the screen; it's not in your face but it is enough to make you appreciate the comic book origins of this film.  Additionally, the costume choices- especially Quinn's- are bright and deliberate.  Birds of Prey also has a surprising amount of action, with varied and imaginative fight sequences.  The fight choreography is not lighting quick, but it is very creative, uses the unique environments and skills of the various characters, and will leave you very entertained.  Whether it's Quinn taking on a group of overconfident thugs, or an imaginative chase scene involving some pretty whacky antics, the action in this film delivers both fun and thrills.  And all of this is complemented by some really great musical choices, both atmospheric music and covers of known songs to fit this movie's style. Review: The Traitor Release date: January 31, 2020 Running time: 145 minutes Starring:  Pierfrancesco Favino, Luigi Lo Cascio, Fausto Russo Alesi The traitor tells the story of a real life mob boss, Tommaso Buscetta who was an Italian mobster in Sicily and Brazil during the 1960s and 1970s.  However, a series of brutal attacks on his family lead him to become a police informant, putting himself and his remaining family at serious risk. This movie has multiple parts, first as a background for a mob boss and the brutal attacks that happened to his family.  Then it turns into more of an investigative, legal drama, as Buscetta becomes an informant.  These two very different themes are handled perfectly; although there is a clean break between the two main parts, there are some flash backs that occur at various times that help tie everything together.  The crux of all of this is Favino's amazing portrayal of Buscetta; Favino has a quiet confidence and a demeanor that shines through in his performance and really feels true to the man that he is portraying.  However, despite Favino being the star, the entire cast is fantastic.  Their portrayal of a variety of mafia members and family members really sets the tone early.  Additionally, Alesi as Judge Falcone is another stellar performance that really helps to move the story along. Everything about this movie contributes to its mood.  The cinematography, the action, the sounds or lack thereof, all help to tell this intriguing story.  The music is especially engaging and is perfectly placed to set the mood of the shot or evoke feelings.  The story itself is compelling and the fact that it is based on a true story helps you feel invested in the characters and their plight.  And the legal scenes, although they could have been fairly boring, are lively and an interesting contrast from American legal dramas.  The Italian court system is a very different world and I really enjoyed this dramatic peak into it.  The only problem with the film is that it seems to cut some corners in terms of story telling and have some very quick transitions at times.  But this is understandable for a movie that is two and a half hours long already. Review: Gul Makai Release date: January 24, 2020 Running time: 132 minutes Starring:  Reem Shaikh, Divya Dutta, Atul Kulkarni Gul Makai is a dramatic nonfiction telling of the events leading to the Taliban takeover of Pakistan and the eventual attack on student activist Malala Yousafzai, a young girl who was shot because she wanted to go to school.  Malala started blogging on BBC Urdu under the pseudonym Gul Makai, detailing the oppression that her hometown faced under the Taliban. Although Gul Makai is advertised as a Malala biopic, and it does detail the oppression faced by her and her village, the film is more focused on the Taliban takeover of Pakistan.  We only briefly meet Malala during the first hour of the film, with most of that focused on the brutality and religious ideology of the Taliban as it terrorized Pakistan.  Even after we meet Malala, there is little told about her or her courageous effort, as the film keeps going back and forth between her and the struggle of the military and insurgents to fight the Taliban.  It is a strange balance, and one that I do not think works.  The film really does paint a great picture of the grim conditions that Pakistan existed in under the Taliban, and the abject violence that occurred to enforce their religious ideology, but it unfortunately does not do a great job of highlighting its main subject.  Even the horrific event that led to the international community finally taking notice of Malala and her plight is only briefly shown. The actual fighting is mostly well done, with lots of gunplay and some big explosions as both the Taliban grab land in Pakistan and as the military fights back against them.  There are some goofs, such as soldier's "firing" by vibrating their guns, but overall it does paint a picture of the violence that occurred in this time.  It also does a fantastic job of painting the sheer brutality of it all, but I also wonder how much was real and how much was for dramatic effect.  The acting is good, if overly dramatic.  The highlight is Malala's father, who portrays a brave, determined person doing all he can for his village and the girls who only want an education.  This film is in a tough place, because it does a good job of portraying what led to the infamous attack on Malala, but it does not do a great job of portraying the main character.  There is very little shown of her blogging and the effort she made to get the international community to notice her plight. Gul Makai paints a grim picture of the Taliban takeover of Pakistan, and the infamous event that led to Malala Yousafzi receiving international attention. Rent It.

Roger Ebert July 12, 1989 "When Harry Met Sally. is a love story with a form as old as the movies and dialogue as new as this month's issue of Vanity Fair. It's about two people who could be characters in a Woody Allen movie, if they weren't so sunny, and about how it takes them 12 years to fall in love. We're with them, or maybe a little ahead of them, every step of the way. Harry meets Sally for the first time at the University of Chicago in the spring of 1977, when they team up to share the driving for a trip to New York. Both plan to start their careers in the city - she as a journalist, he as a political consultant. Presumably they are both successful, because they live in those apartments that only people in the movies can afford, but their professional lives are entirely off-screen. We see them only at those intervals when they see each other. Advertisement They meet, for example, several years later, at LaGuardia Airport. She's with a new boyfriend. They meet again after that, when they're both in relationships, and after that, when her boyfriend has left and his wife wants a divorce. They keep on meeting until they realize that they like one another, and they become friends - even though on their very first cross-country trip, Harry warned Sally that true friendship is impossible between a man and a woman, because the issue of sex always gets in the way. The movie apparently believes that - and it also suggests that the best way to get rid of sex as an issue is to get married, since married people always seem too tired for sex. That and other theories about sex and relationships are tested as if Harry and Sally were proving grounds for Cosmopolitan, until finally, tired of fighting, they admit that they do love one another after all. The movie was written by Nora Ephron, and could be a prequel to her novel and screenplay " Heartburn. which starred Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep in the story of a marriage and divorce. But this marriage seems headed for happier times, maybe because most of the big fights are out of the way before love is even declared. Harry is played by Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan is Sally, and they make a good movie couple because both actors are able to suggest genuine warmth and tenderness. This isn't a romance of passion, although passion is present, but one that becomes possible only because the two people have grown up together, have matured until they can finally see clearly what they really want in a partner. Ephron's dialogue represents the way people would like to be able to talk. It's witty and epigrammatic, and there are lots of lines to quote when you're telling friends about the movie. The dialogue would defeat many actors, but Crystal and Ryan help it to work; their characters seem smart and quick enough to almost be this witty. It's only occasionally that the humor is paid for at the expense of credibility - as in a hilarious but unconvincing scene where Sally sits in a crowded restaurant and demonstrates how to fake an orgasm. I laughed, but somehow I didn't think Sally, or any woman, would really do that. "When Harry Met Sally. was directed by Rob Reiner, the onetime Meathead of "All in the Family. whose credits now qualify him as one of Hollywood's very best directors of comedy. Reiner's films include " The Sure Thing. Stand by Me. This Is Spinal Tap. and " The Princess Bride. Each film is completely different from the others, and each one is successful on its own terms. This film is probably his most conventional, in terms of structure and the way it fulfills our expectations. But what makes it special, apart from the Ephron screenplay, is the chemistry between Crystal and Ryan. She is an open-faced, bright-eyed blond; he's a gentle, skinny man with a lot of smart one-liners. What they both have (to repeat) is warmth. Crystal demonstrated that quality in his previous film, the underrated "Memories Of Me. and it's here again this time, in scenes when he visibly softens when he sees that he has hurt her. He is one of the rare actors who can make an apology on the screen, and convince us he means it. Ryan (from " Innerspace. The Presidio " and "D. O. A. has a difficult assignment - she spends most of the movie convincing Harry, and herself, that there's nothing between them - and she has to let us see that there is something, after all. Harry and Sally are aided, and sometimes hindered, in their romance by the efforts of their best friends ( Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby) who meet on a blind date arranged by Harry and Sally, to provide a possible partner for Sally and Harry. They're the kind of people who don't make it hard for themselves, who realize they like each other, and accept that fact, and act on it. Harry and Sally are tougher customers. Billy Crystal was born on March 14, 1948 in Long Beach, Long Island, New York. He is the youngest of three sons born to Helen (Gabler) and Jack Crystal. His father was a well-known concert promoter who co-founded Commodore Records and his mother was a homemaker. His family were Jewish immigrants from Russia, Austria, and Lithuania. With his father in the music business, Billy was no stranger to some of the top performers of the time. Legends such as Billie Holiday, Pee Wee Russell, and Eddie Condon regularly stopped by the Crystal household. At age 15, Billy faced a personal tragedy when his father died of a heart attack at the relatively young age of 54. This gave Billy a real appreciation of what his dad was able to accomplish while alive and what his mother did to keep the family together. Despite this tragedy, Billy was very upbeat and likable as a kid. He had a unique talent for making people laugh. With television becoming a new medium, Billy got his influence from shows like The Honeymooners (1955) and "The Ed Sullivan Show" and performers like Alan King, Ernie Kovacs and Jonathan Winters. He started doing stand-up comedy at the age of 16. However, his real dream was to be a professional baseball player. His idol growing up was Yankees outfielder Mickey Mantle. He spent long hours in the summers playing softball in the middle of Park Avenue with his brothers and his father, a former pitcher at St. John's University. At Long Beach High, Billy played second base and was varsity captain in his senior year. This earned him a baseball scholarship from Marshall University in West Virginia which he accepted. However, he would never end up playing a game as the baseball program was suspended during his freshman year. This would lead him to leave the university and move back to New York. He then enrolled at nearby Nassau Community College, majoring in theater. It was there that he met and fell in love with a dancer named Janice Goldfinger. They would get married in 1970 and have two daughters. Shortly after, Billy got accepted in New York University, where he majored in Film and TV Direction. While at NYU, he studied under legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. He also worked as house manager and usher on a production of "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NYU in 1970, Billy temporarily worked as a substitute teacher until he was able to get gigs as a stand-up comic. He formed his own improv group, 3's Company, and opened for musicians like Barry Manilow. His impression of Howard Cosell interviewing Muhammad Ali became a huge hit with the audience. He left Long Beach for Hollywood in August of 1976 in the hopes of trying to land a role on a television series. It only took a year before he got his big break when he was chosen for the role of gay character Jodie Dallas on the controversial ABC sitcom Soap (1977. This would be the first time that an American TV show would feature an openly gay character as a regular. The show ran successfully for four seasons and helped to jump-start Billy's previously stagnant career. After Soap (1977) ended in 1981, Billy continued to do his stand-up routine, which was now attracting a larger audience with his growing celebrity status. During this time, he made many TV guest appearances and even hosted his own short-lived variety show, The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour (1982. He became a regular on Saturday Night Live (1975) in 1984 where his Fernando Lamas impression with the catchphrase "You Look Mahvellous" was a huge hit with viewers. This would lead to appearances in feature-length films such as Running Scared (1986) and Throw Momma from the Train (1987. In 1986, along with Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams, he started Comic Relief, an annual stand-up comedy show which helped to raise money for housing and medical care for the homeless. The show has since grown substantially with the continued support of all three comics. Billy's career would peak in the late 1980s and early 1990s. And then I find movies that I can watch hundreds of times, and every time, find something new to enjoy. This is one of those precious few movies which continues to seem amazing to me, even the eleventh time. It's about imperfect, neurotic people, and maybe that's why it's so easy to identify with and to love. It also has an original, hilarious and quotable script, and actors that play their parts so well, it becomes hard to disassociate them from their characters. It uses classic love songs, an engaging cast, and emotional beats to effortlessly avoid cliche. These choices not only set the screenplay apart but also adeptly engage the audience by subverting what we expect in our romantic comedies. Our meet-cute happens a few times. The relationship grows to complain about other people. When they're not together they're perfect and when they are together, they fight. Until they realize the effortless parts are the parts we love.  Lessons from the Screenplay does a great job breaking down these norms and showing how Ephron carries the story to new heights. When Harry Met Sally Ordering Scene Off the bat, I want to start with the most famous scene in the of. We get a few ordering scenes, one that leads to an iconic line, and one that just shows us who Sally is as a character. Here we see she's particular, she wants what she wants, the way she wants it. We, like Harry in this scene, are beginning to understand Sally. And Sally's arc of getting what she's not expecting is set up. But what about Harry? He's a guy who is happy with what life serves him. But will he want a little more? That's his arc! And in this scene, we set them both up to arc together over the course of the film. So what about the other famous ordering scene? This occurs later in the story. The friends have shared meals and are very close friends at this point. We're in a lull, but not really. We know how Sally will order, but what happens if what she orders in the bedroom doesn't go her way? The sexual tension added later shows how comfortable these two people have become together. And how Harry's view of Sally changes when he sees her as a sexual person. It's a great pivot for the story and the audience. Sorry, the line is cut off in this version! When Harry Met Sally Fight Man, fights in movies stress me out so much. I think about my girlfriend, whose name is Sally, and I get an additional PTSD wave when I watch this movie. See, in When Harry Met Sally, you root for them to have sex for most of the movie. And when it happens, you're so excited. I haven't been so excited for fictional people to bone down since I had that dream vermind. The point is, after Harry and Sally finally consummate their all falls apart. What I love about this fight, even with the stomach ulcer it gives me, is that it feels real. Look at the way the dialogue and action are written. We aren't getting speeches, we're getting snippets of two frustrated people who bore their souls to another person and paid the price. The action lines are beautiful, giving us a hint of what's going on inside the characters while not giving away the plot. It's there in support and rocks the house. When Harry Met Sally Ending Rom-coms usually have predictable endings. And I guess, in theory, we can see that When Harry Met Sally has always been headed in this direction. But a movie is about the journey, not about the moment. And since the journey subverts us at every turn, we get worried about these characters. We get worried that they don't have the elements we see in every other couple in the movie. That when they fight, they break up. And it might be food good. Look at the way it's written on the page. Each line gives us more and more suspense. We usually see stuff like this is action movies or thrillers, but it really pays off here. Even today, former President Park Chung-hee remains one of South Koreas most polarizing figures. After seizing power in a 1961 coup, Park ruled South Korea with an iron fist until his assassination on October 26, 1979. Korean blockbuster The Man Standing Next dramatizes the 40 days leading up to this assassination. The film stars heartthrob actor Lee Byung-hun as a character closely modeled after Kim Jae-gyu, chief of South Koreas intelligence agency (the KCIA) and the man who killed Park Chung-hee on that fateful October night. In real life, Kims legacy is as divisive as Parks—some think he killed Park out of selfish anger, while others believe he was tired of Parks authoritarianism and wanted political change. Well never know for sure, especially given South Koreas military executed Kim soon after the assassination. The Man Standing Next exploits this murkiness to reinterpret Kim through the lens of a Shakespearean tragic hero, as a flawed man suffering the slings and arrows of outrageous political fortune. Its an approach that aptly leverages Lee Byung-huns acting prowess and offers a rigorous retelling of events, but results in an overloaded narrative that caters to history buffs at the slight expense of casual viewers and cinephiles. Meet Director Kim Courtesy of Showbox. As its title sequence reveals, The Man Standing Next draws from a non-fiction book called “Chiefs of Namsan, ” which traces the KCIA s history leading up to the assassination (Namsan is a metonym for the KCIA, which was headquartered in Seouls Namsan neighborhood. Despite this realistic foundation, The Man Standing Next chooses to mask historical figures by creating fictional character analogues, perhaps in fear of defamation lawsuits. In the film, Lee Byung-hun plays KCIA Director Kim Kyu-pyeong—modeled after the real-life Kim Jae-gyu. Director Kim is old friends with “President Park” (no first name given) and seen as a potential successor (i. e. the “man standing next”) given the KCIAs powerful status. However, the Director Kim we see onscreen doesnt feel like a powerful spy chief. Instead, hes a man plagued with indecision, toggling between ruthlessness and righteousness as external competition closes in. That competition comes in the form of Presidential Chief Bodyguard Kwak Sang-cheon, an analog for the real-life Cha Ji-chul (who Kim Jae-gyu killed alongside Park. Chief Kwak has cozied up to President Park, and begun pushing Director Kim out of Parks inner circle with aspirations to be the new “man standing next. ” In dire straits, Director Kim must regain favor with President Park by dealing with a former KCIA director whos fled to America and started to reveal secrets about Parks regime (modeled after the real-life Kim Hyong-uk. Meanwhile, Director Kim also discovers the existence—but not identity—of a shadowy figure codenamed “Iago” who mightve already outflanked both him and Cha as “man standing next. ” Regicidal Tragedy Courtesy of Showbox. Those whove studied Shakespeare might recognize Iago as the heinous villain in Othello —a tragedy replete with jealousy, betrayal, and political struggles. While The Man Standing Next doesnt directly adapt Othello, it takes general inspiration from Shakespearean tragedy. Director Kim is a classic tragic hero, racked with both internal and external conflict—and destined to die. As the British Library describes, a tragic hero “becomes a stranger in a world where they had once felt at home, and a stranger to the person that they used to be or thought they were. ” Lee Byung-huns performance as Director Kim deserves praise for portraying the former part of that description. Through the pained facial expressions and body language that he cultivated through past works like A Bittersweet Life, Lee shows Director Kims increasing alienation amidst political struggles. However, The Man Standing Next s complex plot prevents us from seeing a clear contrast between Kim at the films end and beginning; he starts off already sidelined, and just gets more alienated as the story progresses. This plot complexity comes from a desire for historical rigor.
